Planning an eSIM for a 7-day mainland China trip

A sourced checklist for estimating data, checking travel eSIM compatibility and understanding mainland China coverage and plan limits. Checked 3 November 2026.

Quick answer: how much data should I plan for seven days?

Multiply your own expected daily use by 7, then compare that total with the plan allowance. For example, at 0.5 GB/day the estimate is 3.5 GB per traveler; at 2 GB/day it is 14 GB. These are arithmetic examples, not usage benchmarks. Use the eSIM data calculator in Explore more below to try your own daily assumption. This case covers one traveler using one phone in mainland China only.

What does a current China travel eSIM plan include?

As checked on 3 November 2026, Holafly’s China product page describes a data-only plan using CMCC, with no local phone number or conventional calls/SMS. It says hotspot sharing is limited to 1 GB per day; a seven-day plan allows up to 7 GB total to be shared. These are provider-stated terms for that product, not a comparison or endorsement; confirm the exact allowance, duration, hotspot rule, activation trigger, taxes and refund conditions at checkout.

Where does that coverage apply?

Holafly describes its China eSIM as intended for mainland China, names CMCC as the network, and says service may be weaker or unstable in remote areas. It explicitly says Hong Kong and Taiwan need separate coverage. A provider’s coverage description is not a guarantee of signal at a particular address; check the network and destination list for your exact route.

How do I check whether my phone can use it?

Confirm both eSIM support and carrier unlock status with your device maker and home carrier before purchase. Apple says an unlocked iPhone shows “No SIM Restrictions” under Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. iPhone support varies by model and sales region; Apple’s China mainland carrier eSIM rules are different from using a travel eSIM abroad, so check the precise model. Android support also varies by model and region. Install while you still have reliable Wi-Fi and follow the provider’s activation instructions.

How should I budget the plan and trip?

Estimate total data for each traveler, then compare plan duration and any hotspot allowance against that estimate. For the next step, add the confirmed plan price in the Trip budget planner and convert it with your own exchange-rate assumption in the Currency worksheet, both linked in Explore more below. The worksheet is not a live quote. Prices, exchange rates and provider terms change, so verify them at purchase.

What is outside this guide’s scope?

This guide covers a single seven-day mainland-China itinerary and a travel eSIM used for mobile data. It does not establish coverage or service quality for your itinerary, recommend a product, assess local SIM registration, or cover Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan. It is an estimate and planning aid, not professional advice. No referral links are active.
